Let us be friends. Don’t just friend me

Let’s not ping each other, let us not whatsapp. Let us hangout together. Let us remember a time when friendships were earned and not requested. Let us remember how we earned this friendship. It was not the amount of ‘likes’, ‘<3s’ or ‘comments’. It was sharing, laughter, tears and growing pains together.

Let us remember a time when we had to store all the gossip within to share when we met, because phonecalls were too much hassle and we hadn’t yet heard about sms.

Let us remember the time when a chat meant hearing each other’s voice and looking each other in the eye.

And the time when we didn’t send a smiley but we smiled at each other.

Let us remember the time when we were judicious of pictures we clicked and hoped they were ok and didn’t really know how fat we looked in them because film was precious, and we were at the studio guy’s mercy. Let us remember a time when we took pictures to preserve a memory. A time when sharing a picture meant turning pages of a photo album.

Let us go back to the time when tagging was just a game and sharing meant caring.

Let us be the friends we were when there was no virtual, only real.

But let us also be grateful that we are just a click away. Never too far. Let us celebrate the fact that we met beautiful people on Twitter and inspite of smartphones who took us back to a time when friendships were earned.

Let us promise to keep earning and spending love endlessly on each other. But let us not limit our interactions to @ replies and likes.

Happy friendship day.
